Vergel Grubbs

December 28, 1915 - February 20, 2007

Vergel and  four of her five children on her 90th birthday.  (Levenda is not pictured)

Vergel Grubbs, widow of founding pastor of Faith Tabernacle Church of God, Paul Grubbs, passed away February 20, 2007.  With great sadness, we make this announcement of our loss.

Though she leaves a void in our hearts, we can't help but think about the glorious celebration that is taking place in Heaven as she is welcomed by the Son of God, the angels and all the other saints who have gone on before her.  We can imagine the reunion with her beloved husband who preceded her, waiting for her homecoming.

We offer our prayers for strength and comfort to all of her precious family.

Vergel's funeral was held at Faith Tabernacle Church of God; 1606 Electric Street; Lincoln Park, Michigan on Saturday,  February 25, 11:00 AM.  John K Solosy Funeral Home was in charge.

Vergel's son, Rev. Jerry Grubbs, was officiating minister with her grandchildren providing music and singing.  Jerry's wife, Lorinda, provided the organ music and Vergel's daughter, Gloria, sang and played piano.  Christine Collins, member at Faith Tabernacle, also sang.  Vergel's son-in-law, Fred Cornelius (husband of Mary), did the eulogy.   At one point, the platform was filled with her grand/great-grandchildren singing and playing music in her honor.  An overflow crowd was present to say their goodbyes to a grand lady, matriarch of the church since 1954.

Interment was at Ferndale Cemetery at Riverview, MI.

Vergel's favorite Bible verse:  "Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were so, I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also" (John 14:1-3).

October 2007

A Day in Frankenmuth

On October 12, a loaded church bus left Lincoln Park and headed Northwest.  We stopped for breakfast and then on to Frankenmuth where we spent most of the day.

There was camaraderie among the passengers and great fellowship all day.

With over 40 shops and boutiques to stroll through, many feet padded the sidewalks, stopping at places that sent out enticing aromas and attractive displays of their goods.

Some took the horse and buggy ride and enjoyed the guided tour of the sites.  After browsing (and shopping) the shops and enjoying the Bavarian-style sites, our appetites were honed; and we headed for the historical and beautiful Bavarian Inn Restaurant for their famous chicken dinner—and stuffed ourselves as the servers kept the table loaded with good things.

One of the highlights was a tour through the Christmas shops at Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland.  Their boast is that they are the world’s largest Christmas store, and we would not disagree with that assessment.

With all the ladies on the bus, no trip would be complete unless they “hit the malls” and some of them did; then we headed back to Lincoln Park, tired but full and satisfied.

Thanks! Karen, for making all the arrangements.

NATIONAL LADIES DAY CONFERENCE

November 10

Some of the ladies and teen girls traveled to Piqua, Ohio on Friday, November 9, in preparation for the National Ladies Day Conference at the Crossroads CGMA on Saturday, November 20.  Faith Tabernacle's own First Lady Lorinda was the keynote speaker, and we are happy to report that she did an outstanding job.  After settling in their rooms at Comfort Inn, the ladies put on their walking shoes and scoured the mall for bargains and lunch.

Later that evening when Pastor Jerry and First Lady Lorinda arrived, the whole group got together at the Cracker Barrel for the evening meal.   The teens enjoyed a time in the pool while the adults visited with friends from other churches who were staying at the same place.  Our teen fellows couldn't attend the ladies meeting, but they too had a good time in the pool and just hanging out.

Ladies from several states were present for the meeting, with President Lois Centers presiding.  After a greeting from Sister Jeanne Wilson, the Piqua youth choir opened the service with several songs as the meeting got under way.  Others singing during the conference were the Northtowne Church Trio and Kim Walden.  We were very proud of our First Lady Lorinda for the professional way she presented her teaching on "What is Beauty?"  The content was contemporary, but ageless with Biblical background which all ages could identify with.

Other speakers were Sister Debbie Cornelius and Sister Hanna Cooper.  There was also a silent auction during lunch with nice handcrafts and various items displayed.

The ladies reported that they enjoyed the conference, good food prepared by the local ladies and fellowship.

The poem Lorinda wrote and used as the opening of her address is here:
